Notes
1. The newly built suburb of
Varosha was largely uninhabited at the time of the Turkish invasion but
would have housed 40,000 Greek Cypriots.
2. The 1973 census data is
not a reliable source for determining the number of Greek Cypriot refugees
since a) the 1974 Turkish invasion prevented the data from being verified/adjusted
and b) Greek Cypriots that lived or owned property in the north who were
either living overseas or studying or staying in the south on the day that
the census was carried out were not included in the population figures for
the villages located in the occupied areas, therefore a projection has been
made which includes them among the refugees. The population of Varosha,
which would have reached 40,000 Greek Cypriots, has not been counted.
3. The 2004 House of
Commons Foreign Affairs Committee report on Cyprus claims that 50,000
Turkish Cypriots were displaced from the free areas after the Turkish
invasion thus by subtraction 60,000 Turkish Cypriots resided in the
occupied areas at the time.
4. Lobby for Cyprus
estimate, 2004. The Cyprus government estimates the figure at 116,000 in
2003. This figure has now risen to over 150,000 (2006).
5. Cyprus government
figures for 2004.
6. Refugees residing in
Cyprus plus refugees residing abroad, including the projected population of
Varosha.
7. Greek Cypriot Refugees
who left Cyprus after the Turkish invasion and their descendents.
8. Various Turkish Cypriot
press articles. Turkish Cypriot Teachers' Union (KTOS), 1997. Today this
figure is projected to have risen to up to 90,000 (2004/6).
